Caribbean coast
Jamaica Flair and Reggae
The Caribbean coast in the east of Costa Rica is picturesque. Starting with the breathtaking river system in Tortuguero via Puerto Limon to the surfer paradise in Puerto Viejo.
The locals lead a very relaxed life and observe how the trees in the mangrove forest drop their roots into the sea.
The canal system in Tortuguero
The canal system is a perfect start to explore the national park by boat. Many bird species, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, sloths & caimans can be found here.
Village Tortuguero
Tortuguero means "turtle place". About 700 people live in the village, which can only be reached by boat and plane.
Depending on the season, the sea turtles lay their eggs in Tortuguero. The chances to see turtles are very good in September/October.
Salsa and surfing in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Another highlight on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is Puerto Viejo. Reggae is written in capital letters here, which is easily recognizable by the colorful painted accommodations. Every evening in Puerto Viejo, salsa and reggae are served on the beach.
Arenal Volcano
One of the most active volcanoes in the world
The Arenal volcano near La Fortuna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is the most active volcano in the country!
Until its first ascent in 1937, the volcano was not even believed to have volcanic origin. But the first big eruption in the 20th century made clear to everyone:
The ARENAL is here!
The great cone shape of the Arenal is unique in Latin America, which is why the photo can be found in many articles. The Arenal volcano is an absolute must for Costa Rica travellers!
Arenal Suspension Bridge Rainforest
The suspension bridge park is situated directly near the Arenal volcano and is a private nature reserve.
The treetops offer an atmosphere rich in biodiversity with a high number of different plant, animal and butterfly species. From the bridges one has a perspective with good light and is at the same height as the treetops, which makes it possible to enjoy the tree shapes, flowers and biodiversity that live only in the treetops.
Catarata de la Fortuna
A fantastic waterfall in the middle of the tropical jungle. From the city of La Fortuna it is about 5 km, which can also be covered with a relaxing walk along a path. After the hike to the foot of the waterfall (about 30 minutes) you can refresh yourself in the natural water pools.
Baldi Spa
Not only the Romans were able to build beautiful thermal baths. Costa Rica, with its active volcanoes, is ideally suited to assert itself among the spa nations. The largest and most spectacular thermal baths in Costa Rica are located in the area around Arenal.
The Baldi Spa is located on 31 hectares.
Dive into 25 different pools, stroll along beautifully laid out hiking trails and simply relax.
With a view of the picturesque volcano Arenal it is a pleasure to enjoy the hot springs that flow underground into the pools. These moments provide deep relaxation.
Lake Arenal at the foot of the Arenal volcano
The Arenal Lake (Laguna de Arenal) is the largest inland lake in Costa Rica and is located near the volcano Arenal at the place La Fortuna. Especially worth seeing is a trip around the complete reservoir with the most beautiful roads in Costa Rica. Numerous monkey families hide in the tree tops along the lake. Many coatis walk along the roadsides through the bushes and look for attention.
Many surfers have already made the Arenal Sea world-famous as a surfing area. Also many anglers appreciate the reservoir because of the high fish volume.
Pacific coast
The Northwest in Costa Rica
Surrounded by the province of Guanacaste, the northwest is especially interesting for beach vacationers. Liberia, the provincial capital, has an airport with international connections.
South Pacific
The South of Costa Rica
The counterpart to the Caribbean side is the Pacific coast in the south of Costa Rica. Here, too, travellers get their money's worth. The Manuel Antonio National Park near Quepos is also worth seeing.
Beware of the monkeys!
Although the Manuel Antonio National Park is the smallest in Costa Rica with approximately 7 kmĀ², it rarely offers shy animals. Those who want to dive down a little in the Pacific should better look for a personal watchdog for his camera and backpack. The cute coatis and lightning capuchin monkeys don't let you invite them twice and use every cheap sight to get some snacks out of their backpacks.
The beach section is certainly one of the most spectacular in Costa Rica!
Monteverde
The Cloud Forests
Costa Rica's
The unique cloud forests in Costa Rica are an Eldorado for biologists, eco-tourists and nature lovers.
The cloud forests are home to a variety of fauna, especially amphibians, which can hardly be found anywhere else in the world.
Corcovado National Park
The Corcovado National Park is the most species-rich national park in Costa Rica.
According to National Geographic it is even the most biologically diverse place in the world!
Thousands of animal and plant species live in the thirteen different ecosystems of this evergreen oasis.
This unique paradise has been protected since 1975.
Impenetrable rainforest, mangroves, freshwater marshes and a rugged, unspoiled Pacific coast create a uniquely beautiful landscape.
